Putting things away
Scanning fills the inbox. This is the other half: getting every captured thing a home. Cobblr plans the sorting for you, then walks you through the physical part.
The loop:
- In the scan inbox, switch to the Sorting plan lens.
- Accept the groups, one at a time or all at once. Change… re-points one.
- Start put-away walk and check items off bin by bin.
- Standing at the pile instead? Use Live Sort and scan thing after thing.
The sorting plan
Switch lenses with the view control just above the items, and the plan appears in place:
- By session groups pending items by when you scanned them.
- Sorting plan regroups the same pending items by where they should go.
- Each group of similar items gets a destination and the reason for it. An existing bin comes with evidence ("3 similar already there"). A proposed new bin is named and parented sensibly and only created if you accept it. A group with no defensible answer says it needs a destination instead of guessing.
- Items that already have a home lead the plan as ready groups ("All set, just put them away"). They aren't re-planned. I did it! files them where they sit and clears them from the backlog.
- A scanned item arrives with a suggested spot, and filing a batch puts it there. Anything that has to be kept cold is offered the Fridge or Freezer even in a brand-new workspace, and how a thing has to be kept wins over where similar things happen to sit, so three yoghurts in a cupboard never teach it to put the fourth there. A thing that keeps at room temperature goes where the rest of its kind lives (a tin with the groceries, a book with the books), or to the Pantry or Kitchen when there is no history yet. It never suggests the fridge as a general-purpose spot, and never files something into a pantry unless it is actually shelf stable. The File all button names where things are about to go before it does it.
- Accept the rest one at a time or all at once. Nothing moves until you accept.
- Change… on any group re-points it with the location picker. You get the last word elsewhere too: rename a proposed bin by clicking its name, split an item out of a group it doesn't belong in, or expand any item to fix a wrong identification without leaving the plan.
- The hint box takes ground truth in words ("these are all camping gear", "electrical parts go in the closet") and re-plans with it folded in. The hint carries for the rest of your session.
- Tell Cobb opens the assistant beside the plan when one line isn't enough. It sees the plan, turns your description of the space into real locations you confirm, and re-plans for you.
- The dashboard shows a card whenever scanned items are sitting with no home. It counts both piles ("3 scanned items without a home, and 15 ready to put away"), and its one action flips the inbox to the sorting plan, already computed.
Hints that name new places, planning without AI, and sizes
A hint can name a place that doesn't exist yet. On a fresh workspace, "I have an electrical closet" makes the plan propose a new Electrical closet location, created only if you accept.
This works without AI. With no provider configured you get a similarity plan built from where siblings already live, plus starter bins by category, so a fresh workspace with no bins still gets real destinations: a hundred scattered items collapse into a short list of common shelves you can accept, rename, or re-route.
If you tell a container its interior size and give your measurement fields units, the plan stops suggesting a home a thing can't physically fit, however similar its neighbors, and marks any tight bin with a "may not fit" warning. This is declared-only: with no sizes on file there's no size logic, and Cobblr never guesses dimensions from a name or a photo.
The put-away walk
Accepting a plan is the bookkeeping. Start put-away walk is the physical half.
- It walks the accepted groups bin by bin. Each bin becomes your active filing bin while you stand at it.
- Check items off by scanning them with a hardware scanner or just tapping.
- Progress saves as you go. Wander off mid-walk and the scan page offers to resume with the count still left to place.
Live Sort
The plan is for a pile you already captured. Live Sort is for standing at the pile with a thing in your hand: scan it and Cobblr answers immediately with a destination ("go to Bin 3", with the evidence), you drop it in, confirm with one gesture, and scan the next.
- At a bench, Live Sort in the scan page's ⋯ menu opens a full-screen session, and spacebar confirms and moves on.
- From your phone's camera, Sort mode with auto-confirm makes the steady state just pointing at thing after thing.
- A session belongs to you rather than a device, so you can put the directives on a big screen and scan with your phone.
- No bins yet? Set up bins creates numbered Bin 1, Bin 2, and so on, plus an optional Unsorted catch-all. Write matching numbers on your containers with a marker and start.
- The first item of a new family turns the directive into a bind offer ("go to Bin 4, this starts your Fasteners bin"). Confirming names the bin, and the next fastener routes there like any other.
- Printing QR labels for the bins can wait. The bin's identity is the location record, not the sticker.
Organizing what you already track
The same planner runs over things that were never scanned.
- Things with no location, in the scan inbox's ⋯ menu, plans homes for committed items that have no location yet.
- Organize selected in a table view plans just the rows you ticked.
- Accepted groups move the records through their own modules, so history and validations fire exactly as if you had edited each one by hand.
