Labeling on the go

Everyone has the pile. The shelf of unlabeled bins, the drawer of mystery parts, the rack you keep meaning to sort out. What keeps it that way is almost never the labeling. It is the round trip: note what is in bin one, walk to the computer, type it up, print a sheet, walk back, and try to work out which of the twelve labels in your hand belongs to which shelf.

Take the round trip out and the whole job changes.

Clip a battery-powered Bluetooth label printer to your belt. Put Cobblr on your phone. Now you are standing at the shelf: add the thing, tap Print label, and it prints into your hand a second later. Stick it on, step one shelf along. Nothing to carry back. Nothing to match up afterwards. Nothing waiting on you to find a free hour at a desk.

You can label an entire workshop in one pass, in the order you actually walk it. With Cobblr, one can become a labeling ninja.

Cobblr remembers the roll and layout loaded in each printer, and keeps that memory with the printer rather than the browser, so it follows you from a phone to a laptop to a new computer. A repeat pass down the aisle is add, print, add, print, with nothing to re-pick between shelves.

What it takes

Less than you would guess.

  • A cheap Bluetooth thermal label printer. The no-name ones start around forty dollars and the category is largely the same hardware under different names.
  • An Android phone or a laptop, running Chrome or Edge.
  • A roll of labels.

No print server. No cable. No app from the printer's manufacturer. Cobblr talks to the printer straight from the browser, which is why the phone in your pocket is enough to drive it.

The range works in your favour too. With the printer on your belt and the phone in your hand, Bluetooth only has to cross a few inches, which is the easiest job that radio ever gets. Walk the whole building and it keeps up, because the printer travels with the thing driving it.

Where it pays off most

A first pass over somewhere that has never been organised. The order you walk is the order you label, so nothing has to be reconciled later.

Receiving. A box arrives, you unpack it where it lands, and everything goes on the shelf already labeled instead of joining a pile of things to deal with later.

Anywhere far from your desk. A garage, a storage unit, a workshop at the back of a building. The awkward distance that makes labeling a chore stops mattering when the printer comes with you.

If you use an iPhone

iPhones and iPads cannot drive these printers. Safari and Chrome on iOS have no Web Bluetooth, and that is not a gap that will close.

You can still do this, it just takes one more piece: a small always-on computer, usually a Raspberry Pi, that rides along with the printer and holds the Bluetooth connection for you. Your phone talks to Cobblr, Cobblr talks to that, and it talks to the printer. Same workflow, same speed, one more thing on your belt to keep charged.

Worth knowing before you plan around it: that setup is built and its label output is tested, but nobody has yet run it on a Pi against a real printer end to end. If you go that way today, expect to be the first. On Android or a laptop, the browser route is proven.

Before you buy labels

A pocket-sized printer has a pocket-sized compartment. The big 500 and 900 label rolls often will not physically fit inside one, so you are either buying smaller rolls at a worse price per label or respooling the big ones yourself. Neither is terrible, but it is the kind of thing better known before the delivery arrives than after.

If most of your printing happens at a bench, a larger printer that takes a full roll earns its space, and you can still keep a small one for walking around.
